Laurel County Board of Education has named Deputy Superintendent Denise Griebel as the Interim Superintendent for Laurel County Public Schools.
Mrs. Griebel, a longtime member of the Laurel County Schools family, begins the position of Interim Superintendent with a wealth of knowledge and experience.
A Laurel County native, Mrs. Griebel is a 1987 Laurel County High School graduate. She attended Sue Bennett Jr. College, where she earned an Associate Degree. She would go on to receive her Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Biology and minor in Chemistry, her Teacher Certification, and a degree in Secondary Education from Eastern Kentucky University.
Mrs. Griebel continued pursuing her professional education through Eastern Kentucky University, earning a Rank I in Supervision of Instruction in 1998 and an Instructional Leadership-School Superintendent certification in 2006.
Mrs. Griebel is beginning her 32nd year in Laurel County Schools. She began her career in 1992 as a 7th grade Science teacher at North Laurel Middle School. Following eight years in the classroom, she moved to the position of District Assessment Coordinator, requiring her to coordinate and implement the state assessment and accountability for Laurel County Schools.
In 2007, she was hired as an Assistant Superintendent, serving in the role for four years before becoming Deputy Superintendent in 2011. In those roles, she has been responsible for Curriculum and Instruction, including professional development, certified evaluation, and school and district improvement planning, and serving as Federal Programs Coordinator. Her roles have required her to work closely with the Directors of Elementary and Secondary Education, Director of Special Education, Director of Finance, and Director of Technology.
Mrs. Griebel says, “I am honored to be able to serve my district in this capacity. Honestly, I feel a sense of duty and responsibility to do this having been an Assistant or the Deputy Superintendent for 16 years. I am pleased that the Board believes that I can assist and support them and the district during this time. Working with a great team of staff and administrators in Laurel County gives me the confidence to serve in this role. This month begins my 32nd year in education with Laurel County Schools. I am the product of the Laurel County Schools, graduating from Laurel County High School, and both my children attended and graduated from the Laurel County Schools. I am proud of our schools. I believe that our staff and our administrators want the best for their students and work hard for them every day."
Mrs. Griebel has been named to this role following the retirement of Dr. Doug Bennett.
